| Coastal Flood Statement Issued for 7 Massachusetts Counties Until Thursday Midday |
A coastal flood statement has been issued by the National Weather Service for seven Massachusetts counties. This alert is in effect from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 14, 2024, and covers Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket counties.
Flooding Details:
The weather service expects up to half a foot of inundation in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Areas affected may experience shallow flooding (less than one foot deep), particularly along coastal roads from Salem and Gloucester to Newburyport on the North Shore. Rough surf is expected to cause some splashover during high tide.
Safety Reminder:
The National Weather Service advises drivers not to attempt crossing flooded roadways. While roads remain passable, the risk of flooding along coastal routes persists, particularly in vulnerable areas.

Safety Tips for Flooded Areas
1. Move to Higher Ground: Always seek higher ground if you’re in a flood-prone area or low-lying spot.
2.Evacuate When Instructed: Follow local evacuation orders promptly, securing your home before leaving.
3.Disconnect Utilities: If possible, disconnect utilities and appliances to prevent electrical hazards.
4.Avoid Basements: Stay out of areas where water may be submerged, especially if electrical outlets are in danger of flooding.
5.Never Walk in Floodwater: Just six inches of fast-moving water can sweep you off your feet. Avoid walking through it at all costs.
6. Seek Higher Ground if Trapped: If you’re trapped by moving water, find the highest point available and call 911.
Safety Tips for Driving in Heavy Rain
-Beware of Swollen Waterways: Avoid parking or walking near culverts or drainage ditches.
- Maintain Safe Distances: Keep a safe distance from other vehicles, especially in heavy rain.
- Slow Down: Reduce your speed and avoid sudden braking, as wet roads can cause skidding.
- Watch for Slippery Roads: The first 30 minutes of rainfall increases the risk of slick roads.
-Check Your Wipers: Ensure your windshield wipers are working properly and pull over if visibility becomes unsafe.
